Mentoring

Mentoring young professionals is one of the most meaningful and rewarding aspects of being a golf professional. It goes beyond teaching technical skills; it’s about building confidence, nurturing leadership qualities, and preparing the next generation to step into roles of greater responsibility. I’ve been fortunate to learn from some incredible mentors throughout my own career, and I feel a strong responsibility—along with a genuine desire—to pass that same guidance and support along to others. Helping young professionals grow not only strengthens them individually, but also enriches the future of the game and the profession.

As an Assistant Professional, it can sometimes be challenging to find natural opportunities to step into a mentoring role. Fortunately, at Bob O’Link Golf Club, we welcome one or two new interns each year who are eager to learn what it means to be a golf professional at one of the premier clubs in Chicago. This creates an ideal setting for me to guide and support young professionals as they take their first steps in the industry. Having the chance to serve as a mentor is both personally meaningful and professionally rewarding. It allows me to share knowledge, reinforce professional standards, and provide encouragement that helps shape not only their skills but also their outlook on what kind of golf professional they aspire to become. Knowing that I can make even a small impact on their career path gives me a great sense of pride and reinforces my commitment to growing the next generation of leaders in the game.

That same sense of purpose carries into my work at The Masters Tournament, where I have the privilege of serving each year. Over the past two tournaments, my role has grown significantly as I’ve taken on the responsibility of Patron Hub Supervisor, overseeing the quality of the patron experience while managing a staff of 20 tournament employees. Many of these staff members are college students stepping into a fast-paced and demanding environment for the first time. Guiding them through the challenges of the tournament, helping them build confidence, and watching them rise to meet expectations has been an extension of my passion for mentorship. Whether at the club or on one of the biggest stages in golf, I am proud to play a role in shaping the growth of young professionals, just as others once invested their time and guidance in me.
